We stayed at Alpana, a working sheep station, at the end of July 2017. Hosts David and Sally Henery are a very friendly couple, as are their 4 or 5 station Kelpie dogs. They have three main camping sites including three or four powered sites and ensuite sites if required. There is also a caravan/tent camp sites at “The Trees” about 100 metres from the site above. You can easily access the showers and toilets from this site for a small extra fee, if desired. There is also a very large camping area for tents and caravans at Bill’s Paddock about 500 metres from the Homestead. Here, dotted along the creek for a kilometre or so, are several large, generally flat, cleared areas between the trees. Campers are encouraged to pick up dead wood for camp fires and cooking etc and some wood is provided in a bin at The Trees camp site. Hosts do conduct tours of the property for non campers , but if you are a camper, you are allowed access to several areas of the property in your own vehicle. The highlight is a drive up to Sunset Hill which provides magnificent Vistas of the Flinders Ranges for 360 degrees. A 4WD or high clearance vehicle is required and recommended for this drive. We saw many emus, kangaroos and native birds on the property and throughout our camp site. The main road from Wilpena to Blinman is an excellent bitumen road (although many GPS units still have this as a dirt road about 5 years after sealing) and the road into the station is a short kilometre of good dirt road. Alpana provides an excellent base for leaving the caravan and taking day trips to Parachilna Wilpena Pound and through the many gorges such as Parachilna, Brachina, and Bunyeroo and the Moralana Scenic Drive. Well worth the $15.00 per vehicle per night camp fee.
