Starkvale Creek Campground - Expedition National Park QLD

To get to Starkvale Creek Campground, you drive north from Taroom for 18km along the Leichhardt Highway and turn left at the Bauhinia Downs road. Turn left 2km further on towards Glenhaughton and Reedy Creek. Continue for 86km, to the turnoff to the park. Starkvale camping area is a further 23km and accessible only by four-wheel-drive.

Bookings: At the QPWS Taroom office, QPWS Roma office or at the self-registration shelter at the campground. Under the self-registration system, you write out your own permit and insert your camp fees (cash, cheque or credit card details) in the box provided. Expedition National Park has three sections. Access to Robinson Gorge section is via Taroom or Bauhinia Downs, while access to the Lonesome and Beilba sections are via Injune.
It is a 5-6 hour drive between Robinson Gorge section and Lonesome and Beilba sections. There are no roads directly connecting Robinson Gorge section with Lonesome and Beilba sections. Between November and February, wet weather may cause some roads to become unsafe or inaccessible.
Robinson Gorge is 89 km or two hours north-west of Taroom along a gravel road. The last 16 km is suitable for four-wheel-drive vehicles only, eventually arriving at the Starkvale camping area. Alternative access is via the Leichhardt Highway and the Bauhinia Downs road. Roads to the Robinson Gorge section are impassable in wet weather. Weather forecasts are available from the Bureau of Meteorology, or listen to ABC radio on AM747 for the weather forecast for the "Central Highlands and Coalfields" district. If rain is forecast, leave the park before the rain starts or remain in the park after rain until the roads dry out.
Lonesome section
Access from Injune, is via the Carnarvon Developmental Road and the Arcadia Valley Access Road Again, use the DERM website for details. Roads leading to this section are suitable for all vehicle types.
Beilba section
Access from Injune, use the Carnarvon Developmental Road, Fairview Road and Beilba Road to the park (30 km gravel road). High clearance vehicles required.
Walking tracks are provided in Robinson Gorge section of Expedition National Park. There are no walking tracks at Lonesome or Beilba sections. Tracks are ‘graded’ to assist walkers:
Robinson Gorge lookout— Class 3: Gorge access track— Class 4: Shepherds Peak circuit— Class 4 & 5
The Lonesome section of Expedition National Park has parking, picnic tables, wood barbecues and fire rings. There are no toilets or drinking water in this section.
Robinson Gorge and Beilba sections have grassed areas surrounding the campsites that are suitable for picnicking. Pit toilets are provided at Robinson Gorge. There are no facilities at Beilba section. Permits are required to camp anywhere in the park and fees apply. Campground features: In a forest setting, close to walking tracks.
Location: Located 4 km south-east of Robinson Gorge lookout, Starkvale campground can be accessed from the main entry to the park from Taroom.
Access: The campground can be reached only by 4WD vehicles and high clearance camper trailers. It is not accessible for caravans or buses.
Number of sites: 8 sites (separate but not individually numbered).
Campsites are suitable for: tent camping beside your car, walk-in camping and high clearance camper trailers.
Campsite surfaces: Grass.
Facilities: Pit toilets and rainwater tank. Tank water is unreliable so bring your own drinking water.
Open fires: Allowed (except when fire bans apply) in fire rings only.
Generators: Not permitted.
