Mansfield is a lovely area and if you are interested in Ned Kelly then a visit to Stringy bark creek is a must. This is where Ned and the gang on the 26th October 1878, shot dead 3 police who were in pursuit of the Kelly gang. They were ordered to bring back Ned and his brother, Dan dead or alive for the supposid attempted murder of Constable Fitzpatrick. This incident was to be the formation of the kelly gang and the start of the kelly outbreak which lasted until June 1880. Historian Ian Jones has reserched where the shootout site was and it is now well sign posted with informative signs and pictures. The area itself is such a lovely place for a picnic, with the tall gum trees and peacefull surrounds. Not too much further up the road is Harry Powers lookout. He was captured here in 1874. From his lookout you get to see the ranges in the distance and down in the King river valley is where the Quinns used to have their farm, they were Neds Grandparents. When back in Mansfield visit the cemetery where you will have no problem finding the graves of Contstable Lonigan, Contable Scanlon and Sergent Kennedy. In the middle of the town there is a big memorial for the police.
