Avon Downs Rest Area - Ranken NT
Avon Downs Rest Area is located on the Barkly Highway at Ranken in the Northern Territory. Ranken is 1,246km north of Darwin NT. The trip takes approximately 14 hours and 30 minutes, although slower if you are towing a heavy van or large rig. This is a pleasant remote location and can be quite windy at times. The surface is gravel. There is a Police Station opposite the rest area. If you decide to stay here overnight then you do this at your own risk.

This rest area is right in the middle of Avon Downs and is opposite the Police Station. It is a sealed road running parallel to the main road and set back about 20-30 metres or so. It has a shelter and tables at one end and there is plenty of room to back a caravan in between the trees or simply pull up along the road. Some road noise overnight...but generally OK. Has rubbish bins and a water tank (though it was nearly empty and not potable). Good overnight stopping point.
