Album 1 in this series features the Fern House in the lovely Brisbane Botanic Gardens
. The Fern House was opened in July 2002 and has over 80 different species and varieties on display. Here you will be able to view a large variety of ferns including the Fork Fern
. This attractive and hardy fern ally has no true roots and absorbs water through rhizoids growing on the rhizome (stem). The hanging stems dotted with the bright yellow spore-producing synangia make an unusual display. There are many varietys of lycopodiaceae. The spores of this family are full of volatile oils which are highly flammable. These spores were a primary ingredient in fireworks and in flash powders used in photography.
