Members of the Steel City Sport Fishing Club stayed at Barn Hill Station in July 2009. The camping area is on the coast about 12 kms off the main road over a reasonable sandy and sometimes corrugated road. Facilities offered are rustic but quite reasonable. Tariff unpowered was $15.00 per night and limited powered sites (5 amp supply) were slightly dearer (2009). There were about 200 vans there when we arrived and many people come annually for extended stays as the camping site has a double rink bowling green (of sorts?). Round robin tournaments are held a couple of times a week when anyone can play and most of our members took part in a tournament which started with about 75 bowlers. We enjoyed the regular Wednesday night camp BBQ for Christmas in July and usually they have some entertainment on Saturday nights. There is a road down to a beach boat ramp and some steps down to the beach which is very suitable for fishing. One of our members landed a metre long shark off the beach while we were there. Hot/warm water is supplied to the unisex shower toilet blocks using either a chip heater or simply a large coil of agricultural black poly pipe which is quite effective in the day time. The station owner used to bring down superb vanilla slices daily on a quad bike and they served wicked ice cream cones as well. Pizzas made in the station homestead could also be ordered on selected days. The whole area is mainly red sand which is a trial at times but in all...we had a ball there, but had to move on after 4 days. We are returning there again in 2013 and look forward to renewing acquaintances and perhaps some improvements....... don't pass it by!
